Roberto De Zerbi’s Transfer Saga: Bayern, Liverpool, and the Battle for Brighton’s Manager

This summer, Roberto De Zerbi is in high demand, and Bayern Munich has increased their pursuit of the Brighton manager to pounce on a possible Liverpool transfer.

The Reds are looking to replace Jurgen Klopp, but they are in the same market as Bayern and Barcelona, who are trying to find someone to replace Xavi and Thomas Tuchel. Xabi Alonso, who eliminated himself from the running last week by pledging his future to Bayer Leverkusen, was a potential target for both Liverpool and Bayern.

De Zerbi became a more appealing proposition as a result, and he made hints about his openness to switching clubs before Brighton’s 2-1 loss to Liverpool on Sunday. The Italian is regarded as one of the best tactical innovators in the game, and his experience with Sassuolo, Brighton, and Shakhtar Donetsk shows he may advance to a larger team.

According to The Times, Max Eberl, the new sporting director at Bayern, is a huge fan of the Brighton manager and has already gotten in touch with De Zerbi to see if he’s interested. Bayern knows that Liverpool is also considering De Zerbi, therefore they have backup candidates in former manager Julian Naglesmann and former Manchester United temporary coach Ralf Rangnick.

Rangnick is in command of Austria, while Naglesmann, who was fired little over a year ago, is now looking forward to managing Germany at Euro 2024. Sebastian Hoeness, the nephew of Bayern’s general manager Uli Hoeness, was reportedly a target for Bayern too, but he just renewed his contract with Stuttgart.

De Zerbi’s Brighton contract expires in June 2026, although he has a release clause that may be activated this summer for almost £12.8 million. His remarks prior to Bayern’s match against Liverpool will also have inspired Bayern. De Zerbi said : “I have a different way to decide my future.

“I want to speak with my club, I have a contract but the problem is not the contract – the problem is to find the same plan, the same target, the same vision for the future. For me, I have not decided yet what is my future, because I have the contract, but anyway I want to speak with Tony [Bloom], my club, to understand their plan, to understand his plan, the Tony plan. Then we take the decision together, without problems.

According to football journalist Fabrizio Romano, Roberto de Zerbi has a release clause of approximately £12/13m in his contract with Brighton, which is only valid during the summer. De Zerbi is reportedly keen to discuss his future plans with the Brighton board. Meanwhile, internal discussions are still ongoing at Bayern, although there have been no concrete talks with Liverpool thus far.
